Frequently Asked Questions

What is the history of KBeach? It all began with KSUL, the student run campus radio station at California State University Long Beach. It was a lab for radio students, a voice for the University and an outlet for new music in the mid-70's and early 80's. In 1980, the university, then under the leadership of now California Congressman Steve Horn, decided to acquire, from Long Beach City College, KLON. Horn's administration felt that a new "professional" station would bring prestige to the campus and that the student station would have to go. Radio students fought to the end to keep KSUL on the air, sighting the valuable training that the station provided. Friday, March 20, 1981, KSUL left the air.

KBCH began on the air in 1995 as a cable broadcast radio station under the direction of Professor Pounds in the Film and Electronic Arts Department. As an offshoot of this, Mike Soultanian (a student) started broadcasting over the internet from his dorm room. KBeach's first official status was recognition as a student organization under the Film and Electronic Arts Department. In 1998, the station became a department of A.S.I., which funded the station's broadcast needs and provided the space in the Student Union for the new station. KBCH soon was in direct competition with KBEACH, and in 1999 an FCC inquiry brought attention to this competition (because both planned to use Low Power FM Capability). Although KBCH had planned to continue working towards growth, the station seems to have folded altogether, likely due to the availability of the less stringent environment of KBeach. In the Spring of 2000, Kbeach was shaken by an attempt of its founding members to go independent. This was after they had convinced the ASI to invest $40,000 on the upstart of the project. Their attempt was unsuccessful, and many of the founders left and Kbeach was in a state of limbo, having no clear direction.

In 2000, the ASI hired a Media Adviser, who among other duties would be responsible for balancing the needs of students with the necessities of the ASI corporation. Since that time, the participation level has been stable and overall reliability of the station has been reasonable.

At a time in history where it is a virtual impossibility that we will ever again have an FM or AM signal, we also have the exciting opportunity to have a strong presence on Satellite Radio as well as PDA interfaces and internet radio. We also are in an era where each host has the possibility of syndicating their own programs throughout the world. This will require paying close attention to the trends and making a commitment to one of these areas before the opportunities become oversaturated

The students who will drive Kbeach to its next level have an exciting opportunity to explore a new world and make decisions that could place them in very visible and successful positions. Kbeach is already far ahead of the game technologically, having a more advanced and sophisticated studio than most other Universities. Now, it is time to focus on quality of content and generating mass appeal.

What service does Kbeach provide? Kbeach will provide training as outlined in the concept statement above. In addition, promotional time will be offered to all ASI student organizations free of charge and to general CSULB community for greatly reduced rates. Businesses wishing to reach the CSULB community may also do so by purchasing time on the station in the form of commercials or official sponsorship. As a streaming media broadcast center, Kbeach will make itself available to important civic happenings such as political debates; speeches; concerts; etc

What is the organizational structure of Kbeach? The Organizational Structure fluctuates from year to year dependent upon need and the talent that is available within KBeach. This year, to accommodate an exceptionally talented group of people, the General Management role will be divided into three positions, with the General Manager of Administration reporting directly to the ASI Media Adviser. This individual is then responsible for overseeing the General Manager of Content and the General Manager of Operations, who will each have a staff of standard radio station volunteer employees.

What is the station's programming format? Kbeach is a free-format station, thus offering a diverse selection of music genres. Although KBeach broadcast music such as classic rock, reggae, alternative, and jazz, the more common music aired among the genres are alternative, rock, and hip-hop. KBeach also broadcasts specialty shows such as sports, sex talk, news, and even comedy. These specialty shows require more preparation; therefore demand additional time and quality effort.

When does Kbeach Broadcast? Fall and spring broadcasting hours are from 10:00am-Midnight, Mondays through Fridays. Saturday broadcasting hours are from 9:00am-10:00pm and Sundays have no live broadcasting. These are the primary hours of broadcasting, however, DJ's can opt for earlier shows. With the authorization of the general manager and media advisor, DJ's may be granted earlier time slots.

Automation plays during the opposite hours of live shows. The primary automation hours are from 12:00am-10:00am.

DJs may choose to broadcast during finals week, nonetheless are not obligated to do so. Education is each DJs primary priority; so instead, they may broadcast a pre-recorded show.

During both winter and summer vacation, DJs have the opportunity to broadcast live shows. It is not required, though if you choose to do so, you must obtain the consent of the general manager and media advisor. Because the staff may normally go on vacation during these times, the station and equipment may not be maintained safely and efficiently. Generally speaking, automation is preferred during these times because the station may remain secure and automation can broadcast prerecorded shows in addition to regular playlist programming.

Where is Kbeach heard? KBeach may be heard throughout the CSULB University Student Union (USU) building, CSULB Residential Housing area, Long Beach Charter Community Cable Television in over 250,000 homes, and especially on the internet @ www.kbeach.org. In the near future, KBeach may possibly be heard in the Nugget bar and grill.
